Dependent Visa 👇
🢠1. What It Is A Dependent Visa allows the eligible family members of a person who holds a valid UK visa (the 'main applicant') to join them or stay with them in the UK. This visa is linked directly to the main applicant's visa.
This means a dependent's visa will have the same expiry date as the main applicant's visa, and their eligibility to be in the UK relies on the main applicant maintaining their visa status. Dependents can typically work and study in the UK.
📜 2. Who Can Apply A person can apply as a dependent if they are the family member of a main applicant who is in the UK on an eligible visa (e.g., Skilled Worker, Student, Health and Care Worker). Eligible dependents are typically:
- A spouse, civil partner, or an unmarried partner (where the couple has been in a relationship akin to marriage for at least two years).
- A child under the age of 18.
- A child over 18, if they are currently in the UK as a dependent.
It is important to note that recent rule changes have restricted the ability of some visa holders, such as students and certain care workers, to bring dependents.
🔑 3. Key Requirements The requirements for a Dependent Visa vary based on the main applicant's visa category, but the core criteria generally include:
- Proof of Relationship: Applicants must provide strong evidence of their relationship to the main applicant. This includes marriage or birth certificates, or for unmarried partners, evidence of at least two years of cohabitation (e.g., joint tenancy agreements, bank statements).
- Financial Requirement (Maintenance): The applicants must show they have a specific amount of money available to support themselves in the UK without relying on public funds. The exact amount depends on the main applicant's visa route.
- Genuineness of Relationship: For partners, the relationship must be genuine and subsisting, and the couple must intend to live together in the UK.
